Minneapolis police on Tuesday announced an arrest has been made in the weekend crash that killed 20-year-old University of St. Thomas student Ria Patel.

Patel was killed when the car she was in plowed into a traffic light near the corner of Stinson Boulevard and Ridgeway Parkway in northeast Minneapolis. Responding police officer found her trapped in the car. She was extricated and lifesaving effort were made, but Patel was pronounced dead by paramedics.

The driver of the car was nowhere to be found, leading Minneapolis homicide detectives on a search that ended Tuesday morning with the arrest of 21-year-old Michael Laurence Campbell at a home in Wright County. Campbell was booked into the Hennepin County Jail for criminal vehicular homicide.

"I'm not sure much about the relationship she had with this person," Ria’s brother, Nishul Patel said.

At a makeshift memorial Monday near the spot where Ria spent her last moments, Nishul  remembered his little sister as a happy person, with the ability to light up any room she was in.

"She always had a smile on her face," Patel said. "[She was] the life of the party to be around, and I know every one of her friends and family would say that."
