Former Minnesota police chief dies in apparent hunting accident

The Becker County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help after a former police chief was found dead in an apparent hunting accident.

Saturday evening, authorities responded to a report of a dead man inside a vehicle, which was on a logging trail about a half mile east of Yellowhead Trail and about a half mile west of Little Flat Lake, Section 25 in West Sugar Bush Township.

Officials identified the man as 53-year-old Jay Clayton Nelson of Cormorant Township. KFGO Radio confirmed Nelson was the former Lark Park police chief.

According to a preliminary autopsy, Nelson died of a gunshot wound.

The Becker County Sheriff's Office looking to find any possible witnesses to the incident. Officials hoping for information on anyone who may have been hunting in that area, any vehicles that may have been there and if anyone heard gunshots.
