Man goes through ice on ATV on Big Kandiyohi Lake
KANDIYOHI COUNTY, Minn. (KMSP) - Firefighters rescued a man from Big Kandiyohi Lake after he went through the ice while riding his ATV Thursday morning, according to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office.
At 7:19 a.m., a caller told authorities a man riding an ATV about 200 yards from shore broke through the ice. Officials responded along the south side of Big Kandiyohi Lake, which is near the 7200 block of 147th Avenue SE of Lake Lillian, Minn.
Blomkest Fire Department firefighters wearing cold water suits saved the man from the water. A helicopter later flew the man to St. Cloud Hospital. Officials say the man is 49-year-old William Wurtz of Hanska.
Authorities are asking people to use caution on ice-covered lakes and to remember that ice thickness varies by location.
