Lynx point guard Lindsay Whalen retiring from WNBA at end of 2018 season

Minnesota Lynx star Lindsay Whalen announced Monday she will retire from the WNBA at the end of the 2018 season. 

Whalen, 36, is currently pulling double duty as a professional basketball player and head coach of the Gophers women's basketball team The four-time WNBA champion committed to playing at least one more season with the Lynx when she took on the coaching job last spring

"I would like to announce that after 15 seasons in the WNBA I am going to retire after the 2018 season,” Whalen said in a statement. “I would like to thank the WNBA, the Connecticut Sun, and the Minnesota Lynx for believing in me all of these years. I look forward to the next chapter in my basketball career and wish my Lynx coaches and teammates all of the best in the future.” 

The Hutchinson native will retire as the WNBA's all-time wins leader, with 322 career victories. 

The Lynx have already clinched a spot in the WNBA playoffs, which begin on Aug. 21. 

Whalen and Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve will hold a press conference at Mayo Clinic Square at 1:30 p.m.
