Vikings release kicker Daniel Carlson, expected to sign Dan Bailey

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The Minnesota Vikings have waived kicker Daniel Carlson after he missed two field goals in overtime during Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers, which ended in a 29-29 tie. 

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Vikings are expected to sign kicker Dan Bailey, who was released by the Dallas Cowboys earlier this season. 

At a press conference Monday, head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed the team is bringing Bailey in for a physical. 

After the game, Carlson said he was “just trying to be relaxed and hit it like any other kick” when his 35-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right at Lambeau Field. 

“It feels terrible. Obviously, I let my team down,” Carlson said after the game. “Credit to them. They fought back time and time again, gave me opportunities. I just didn’t execute at the end of the day. It’s disappointing for me just personally that the team fought so hard. Luckily, at least we came up with a tie, but we expect to win that and I expect to make those kicks to win the game for the team.”

The rookie kicker didn’t have an answer for what went wrong in overtime.

“I’ll have to look at it later. I’m not really sure. That last one was probably just something more something with the confidence after missing twice earlier. That’s frustrating and obviously a shorter one I should never miss like that.”

Carlson’s’ first overtime miss was from 49 yards out. Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins drove the team even closer for the final chance at a game winner.

“I felt alright. It was a nice short kick. I was just trying to be relaxed and hit it like any other kick, but obviously missed right again. I don’t know what it was today but that was just a rare miss for me – usually if I’m missing I know what it was. So we’ll just have to look at it and evaluate. I don’t think it was really so much mental. Obviously it was tough to come back after two misses already and then hit a third one and obviously another bad results. Got to step it up for the team.”

Carlson said he had the support of his Vikings teammates after the game.

“I think the guys around me they did just a great job of keeping me up and telling me that they’re behind me. It’s tough for them because they fought so hard and I let them down. I’ve just got to bounce back and get that confidence and look at what I did and correct that and not let it happen again.”

In Cleveland, the Browns appear to be moving on from kicker Zane Gonzales, who missed four attempts in Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, including a go-ahead extra point attempt late in the fourth quarter. A person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press the Browns will sign free agent kicker Greg Joseph to replace Gonzalez, who missed four attempts in Sunday's loss at New Orleans.

Gonzalez missed two extra points and two field-goal attempts, including a 52-yard attempt in the final seconds that would have forced overtime. After his final miss, Gonzalez sat alone on the Browns' bench before until Saints kicker Wil Lutz consoled his counterpart.
