(KMSP) - Nearly 500,000 U.S. cars are affected in the Volkswagen emissions scandal that erupted last week.
On Sept. 18, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revealed Volkswagen had illegally installed software in its diesel-power cars that could manipulate pollution tests, allowing the cars to emit harmful pollutants at rates well above acceptable standards.
A total of 11 million vehicles worldwide were installed with the software, Volkswagen announced Tuesday. The company said it will set aside $7.3 billion to address the issue.
Both the U.S. Justice Department and the EPA have ongoing investigations in the automaker’s actions.
