A young man jumped from a second-floor balcony to escape an apartment fire in Brooklyn Center, Minn. late Friday morning, but his 2-year-old little brother was left behind and later died at the hospital.

The fire happened just before 11:30 a.m. at the Twin Lakes Apartments on 58th Avenue N. The fire chief was delivering meals nearby and was the first one to arrive at the scene.

Police made contact with the older brother after he jumped out of the window, and he said his 2-year-old brother was still inside. Keoni Holt was found in a back bedroom and was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

No parents were in the apartment. It appears the fire started near a couch in the apartment, but the official cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
