MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - The cold weather is great news for organizers of the Art Shanty Projects gearing up to open on Saturday after last year’s warm-up cut their program short.
2024 melted away
The backstory:
Last winter, organizers said they postponed the opening date because the ice was not quite ready.
Even more weather-related issues hit after they were able to get up and running.
"We had one weekend and then a few days later we had to evacuate the ice because it was in the 50s. To my knowledge, it was our shortest run in our 20-year history at that point," said Erin Lavelle, Artistic Director of Art Shanty Projects.
Ice conditions look promising for a solid run this year.
2025 program
What we know:
The team has been monitoring ice conditions and said they are on track to open on time. The program requires at least 10 inches of ice to operate.
"We have been measuring the ice vigilantly, and right now, just the other day, we measured 13 inches," said Lavelle.
The village is scheduled to open on Saturdays and Sundays from Jan.18 to Feb. 9.
This year will feature 20 shanties and 20 performances, featuring public art accessible to all. The team does welcome donations.
