Bloomington is the only school district in the Twin Cities metro not closed or delayed Monday following a winter storm that dropped several inches of snow in the area overnight Sunday.

As of 8 a.m., Bloomington had received 4.3 inches of snow. The City of Bloomington has declared a snow emergency.

The school district said it did not want students to miss too much school, but families are encouraged to use their own judgement to determine what is best for their children.

“Our goal is to minimize the loss of instructional time while being mindful of student and staff safety,” the school district said on Twitter. “In general, we will remain open. To cancel, delay or close schools early poses significant issues for families with transportation and child-care arrangements.”

Besides Bloomington, every other district defined as a metro school district by the Minnesota Department of Education, are either closed or on a two-hour delay, with the exception of Shakopee and White Bear Lake which both already had a scheduled day off for administrative reasons.

Wind chills are expected to be the next problem facing school districts this week, with cold air hitting the area Monday night and a Wind Chill Warning in effect for the Twin Cities metro from 3 p.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Thursday. Wind chills in the 35 to 55 degrees below zero are expected.

Since temperatures and wind chills are more predictable than snow accumulations, Bloomington said it expects to make a decision the night before about whether school is closed or delayed. Families should always assume school is in session unless the school district communicates otherwise.
