A car crashed into an apartment building in Minneapolis’ St. Anthony West neighborhood Monday morning, hitting the gas meter and starting a fire.

The Minneapolis Fire Department said around 5 a.m., crews responded to a 5-story apartment building on the corner of Broadway Street and Marshall Avenue Northeast where a car had crashed into the building and struck the outside gas meter. When crews arrived, the car was on fire and the fire was being fed by the gas coming from the broken gas meter.

Crews were able to shut off gas from the interior of the building, but they could not shut off the broken exterior gas meter due to the heavy fire and damage to the gas meter, according to the fire department. CenterPoint Energy was called to the scene to help crews shut off the exterior gas.

Firefighters evacuated the building.

The fire was contained to the exterior of the building and did not spread to the inside, the fire department said. Once CenterPoint Energy shut off the gas, crews were able to extinguish the fire.

The fire department requested a Metro Transit bus for temporary shelter for the evacuated apartment residents. All the residents were eventually able to return to their apartments. No injuries were reported.
