Deadly shooting has north Minneapolis residents 'terrified'

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Residents of north Minneapolis are growing more concerned about the escalating violence with gunshots getting closer to injuring or killing innocent bystanders.

Wednesday afternoon in broad daylight, witnesses say a man chased down and kept shooting at a man as school children were walking home near Highway 55 and Penn. Police said there appeared to be a dispute between several parties that ended in a gunfire exchange, which left a man dead. Witnesses and neighbors say they are now terrified. 

One woman who didn’t want to be identified said, “It doesn’t feel safe to have my family here and I don’t know how to keep them safe with bullets flying around past our heads.”
Yuefeng Thao is just nineteen years old and watched last night as the murder unfolded right outside his front door.  He also worries about what’s next.

“I’m assuming there’s going to be more shots fired if we don’t do anything about it,” Thao said.

Just about a week and a half ago, a shootout unfolded on Newton Avenue that left a man dead. Before that, a young girl was struck in the foot by a stray bullet. Police say at least some of it is gang violence. They’ve increased patrols in the area and are working with community leaders to end the violence.  Some residents told Fox9 they didn’t think there was anything anyone could do.
