The family of the Minneapolis man shot and killed by Burnsville police in a McDonald’s parking lot Thursday morning says the 39-year-old was not known to be violent. Now, they are seeking answers for what led to his death.

Map Kong, a Cambodian native, is described as a happy, joyful father of two who loved R&B and went well out of his way for those he loves.

He was killed when officers were called to the McDonalds on Highway 13 in Burnsville Thursday on the report of a suspicious man inside his car, alone and allegedly wielding a knife.

Diane Cheney, Kong’s aunt, says he was not known to carry a knife and had never harmed anyone or gotten in fights before.

“He could’ve been waving his keys [or] his phone,” Cheney says. “Who knows? It’s early morning.”

Chim Un, the mother of one of Kong's children, also needs answers.

“Now my son is going to be without his father and I don't think that's fair,” Un says.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident. Five Burnsville police officers have been placed on standard administrative leave.

The BCA expects the medical examiner to release more information within the next few days.
