A $140 million renovation of Target Center is finally complete just in time for the Timberwolves' home opener on Friday.

Within the limits of existing space and unchangeable engineering, the Timberwolves are pretty happy with what they came up with. For example, the open deck on the arena’s south end pushes the 27-year-old arena into modern design.

“We’ve created gathering places where people can get their food, maybe take a break, talk with their friends before they go to their seats. This one just happens to have access to the bowl itself,” said Ted Johnson, Minnesota Timberwolves representative.

The bowl itself didn’t change that much, but was spiffed up as much as possible.

“The actual structure of the bowl didn’t change,” Johnson said. “This was built as a fantastic basketball building with a really great pitch, but you’ll see a lot of surfaces touched - new seats, digital boards.”

The first five rows - including a couple on the floor – will sit back a few more feet than before. People will also have access to the Lexus Courtside Club, a private restaurant renovated from the building’s original lobby.

While the new lobby on the corner isn’t necessarily bigger, it’s brighter and more welcoming.
