Eagan police officer hurt in crash on I-35E

A section of Interstate 35E is closed Tuesday morning following a crash that appears to have involved an Eagan police squad car, a semi-truck and a third vehicle. The Eagan Police Department told FOX 9 an Eagan officer is recovering from injuries at Regions Hospital. The extent of their injuries — and whether others were injured — hasn't been released.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating, with its incident report stating the officer was merging onto northbound I-35E from Pilot Knobb Road just after 5 a.m. He was traveling in the right lane with his emergency lights activated as he was responding to an emergency call.

The officer attempted to make a left turn at the median crossover at Yankee Doddle Road when he collided with a semi-truck traveling northbound, the report said. The squad car then hit a third vehicle on its passenger side before coming to a rest in the center median.

It's unclear if anyone else was injured in the crash, which occurred at 5:09 a.m. Tuesday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation's website lists the road still closed as of 11:45 a.m. Tuesday but it had reopened by 1:25 p.m.

Officer Eggum has been with the Eagan Police Department for just over a year, Eagan PD says. A tweet from the Eagan PD on Sept. 21, 2022, shows Eggum being sworn into office at the Eagan City Council meeting on Sept. 20, 2022.
