Klobuchar, Emmer to join President Obama on Cuba trip
(KMSP) - Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Rep. Tom Emmer will join President Barack Obama on his historic visit to Cuba on Monday and Tuesday to promote their ongoing effort to lift the U.S. trade embargo with the country.
Klobuchar is the lead Senate sponsor of the bipartisan Freedom to Export to Cuba Act. The bill would lift the trade embargo between the two countries that has been in place since 1960 and would eliminate legal barriers to Americans doing business in Cuba.
Emmer is leading a similar effort of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Cuba Trade Act of 2015 would also lift the trade embargo, allowing American companies to trade freely with Cuba.
President Obama is the first sitting president to visit Cuba since 1928. He arrives in the country along with the First Lady and his two daughters on Sunday. He is scheduled to meet with Cuban President Raul Castro on Monday and will address the Cuban people on Tuesday.
