Minneapolis police shoot, kill man after 6-hour standoff in apartment building

Minneapolis police shot and killed a man following an hours-long standoff at an apartment building in the Seward neighborhood where multiple shots were fired.

Minneapolis police shot and killed Andrew Sundberg, 20, following an hours-long standoff at an apartment building in the Seward neighborhood where multiple shots were fired. 

Minneapolis police say the incident started around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when police responded after a woman called saying a man had shot into her apartment on the 900 block of 21st Avenue South. As officers arrived on the scene, they heard more shots being fired. 

The Minneapolis Police Department also identified the officers involved in the shooting as Aaron Pearson and Zachary Seraphine.

Video shows Minneapolis man during standoff before deadly encounter with police

Minneapolis police say the incident started around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when police responded after a woman called saying a man had shot into her apartment on the 900 block of 21st Avenue South. As officers arrived on the scene, they heard more shots being fired.

Video of standoff 

A witness across the street from the apartment live streamed the standoff on the Citizen app. The video shows Minneapolis police talking to Sundberg standing in the window of an apartment building. 

Mom, kids rescued from apartment

"As officers arrived on the third floor they heard additional shots officers also saw debris exploding from walls as more shots were fired," public information officer Garret Parten said at a Thursday morning briefing. "Officers called for backup and worked to rescue the mother and her two children to safety. Officers also worked to move others they believed to be in danger’s way to safety. The focus then became on a man who had isolated himself in his apartment."

MPD Crisis Team negotiators and MPD SWAT team members responded to the building.

Video shows Minneapolis officers attempting to negotiate with man before police fatally shot him

This video taken by a user of the Citizen app appears to show Minneapolis police attempting to communicate with the suspect in a standoff in the Seward neighborhood that started at 9:30 pm Wednesday. Police later fatally shot the suspect.

Negotiating with shooting

Throughout the night police say they attempted to get Sundberg out of his apartment. They brought his parents to the scene to call him, left him voicemails, and video messages.

After about six hours of negotiations, around 4:30 a.m., officers fired at Sundberg. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. What immediately led up to the shooting is unclear at this time.
