LOS ANGELES - Mexican musical legend Paquita la del Barrio, known for her powerful voice and fierce defense of women, died at her home in Veracruz early Monday at the age of 77.
What we know:
Paquita la del Barrio, whose real name was Francisca Viveros Barradas, passed away on Monday at her home in Veracruz, eastern Mexico.
"With profound pain and sadness, we confirm the sensitive death of our beloved Paquita la del Barrio at her home in Veracruz," the statement read. "She was a one-of-a-kind and unmatched artist who left a permanent mark in the hearts of all who knew her and who enjoyed her music."
"In this moment of great pain we ask respectfully that public opinion and the media give us space and understanding so her family can mourn in peace and privacy," the statement continued. "We thank you for your understanding and respect in this difficult time. Rest in peace, your music and legacy will live forever in our hearts."
What we don't know:
While her team confirmed her death, the exact cause has not been disclosed. Earlier this year, Paquita postponed a concert at the National Auditorium due to unspecified health issues, but further details about her health were not made public.
The backstory:
Born in Veracruz in 1947, Paquita began her career as a local performer in Mexico City. She rose to fame in the 1980s after signing a recording contract, eventually releasing over 30 albums. Her music, including hits like "Rata de Dos Patas," "Tres Veces Te Engañé," and "Las Mujeres Mandan," became anthems for many, especially women.
While her fan base was predominantly women, her powerful performances also drew men to her concerts.
"At the beginning, many men said ‘Why would I go, to get shamed? ... Now they join the concerts. They go with their girlfriend, their wife, and they love it," Paquita said in a 2016 interview with the AP.
A two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominee, Paquita received recognition from across the industry, including the Billboard Latin Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021, which was presented to her by Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny.
