Good Grocer: Low-cost food powered by volunteers
Good Grocer in Minneapolis is more than just a spot to stock up on essentials; it provides food at a lower cost thanks to an all-volunteer business model. FOX 9's Chenue Her has more.
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A grocery store in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis is showing what it means to be a good neighbor. For the last couple of years, Good Grocer has found a way to keep people fed at a low cost.
A vision of inclusivity
The backstory:
The store started thanks to a mission dreamed up by founder Jeannette Vickman.
"Here at Good Grocer, we believe that no matter your social economic status, your age, or your physical or cognitive abilities, there’s a place for you. There’s a place for you to give and contribute to the model," Vickman explained.
The more than 200 volunteers at Good Grocer range from students to people who are retired. They work the cash registers and stock shelves.
Proceeds from the grocery store are used to stock the shelves of Good Grocer’s food outlet, which helps people facing food insecurity.
What it’s like volunteering
What they're saying:
Mark Daum is a long-time volunteer. Over the past 10 years, he’s seen the Good Grocer vision evolve.
"Our world’s kind of goofy place right now and there’s a lot to be negative about, but this is a positive place, a place where it’s okay to be different. Come on in. We want you to be either a part of it or shop here," Daum said.
How to get Involved
What you can do:
The store is always looking for people to chip in to the cause. Anyone can shop at Good Grocer, but those who regularly volunteer 2 ½ hours a month receive an extra 20% discount on groceries.
