What we know:
Mayor Frey announced his re-election campaign on Wednesday, saying he wants to continue his work of making Minneapolis a safer, more prosperous and more affordable city.
"The job isn’t finished yet, and that’s why I’m running for a final term as mayor," Frey said in a campaign video.
Frey highlighted some of his achievements during his time in office, including an increase in affordable housing, rebuilding the Minneapolis Police Department’s ranks and public safety, and rebounding tourism in downtown Minneapolis.
The mayor also stressed the need for steady leadership during "uncertain times," one that prioritizes the needs of residents and the city ahead of a political agenda.
"I’m running because with everything going on in the world, experience matters. I’m running because I recognize that the opposite of Donald Trump’s extremism is not the opposite extreme. The opposite of extremism is good, thoughtful governance," Frey said in a statement. "I have stood up for what’s best for our city even when it was not politically expedient to do so. It’s time for us to love our city more than our ideology. Together, we can make Minneapolis a national model for progressive governance that is laser-focused not on politics, but on delivering for residents."
Frey expanded on his campaign in a social media post, saying:
"I’m running for reelection because I love this city. It’s where I’ve chosen to raise my family. It’s my home. And it's the honor of my life to fight for this city every day as your mayor.
"The opposite of Donald Trump’s extremism is not the opposite extreme. The opposite of extremism is good, thoughtful governance powered by following the data, and listening to the experts. We must love our city more than our ideology.
"For years, we have delivered on our communities' calls for necessary reform to public safety, more affordable housing, and more opportunities for our workers and local businesses. But there’s more work to do. Minneapolis, I’m all in."
