Minnesota LGBTQ+ advocacy group pushes back on transgender sports bill

(FOX 9) - The newly sworn-in U.S. House of Representatives is looking to fast track a bill that amends Title IX and bans transgender athletes from women's sports.

What we know:

The policy would apply to all institutions receiving federal funding. The bill says schools may not permit a male to participate in an athletic activity designated for women; and adds that sex can be solely defined as a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.

What they're saying:

"Many folks in the LGBTQ community are concerned… we know this is going to cause real harm to them, regardless of whether the policies go into place, as they see this national discussion around their humanity," OutFront Minnesota executive Director Kat Rohn said. "Our communities are part of public life. We will continue to advocate for ourselves and continue to be participants in public life, even in a shifting policy environment."

What they're saying:

"Americans have loudly spoken that they do not want men stealing sports records from women, entering their daughters’ locker rooms, replacing female athletes on teams, and taking their daughters’ scholarship opportunities. My legislation stands for truth, safety, and reality: men have no place in women’s sports."

Meanwhile, just last month, NCAA president Charlie Baker testified during a Senate Judiciary committee hearing. Baker says of 510,000 NCAA athletes, less than 10 identify as transgender.
