MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The Minnesota Twins wore the number 11 and red jerseys in Jacob Wetterling's honor for their Friday night game against the Cleveland Indians.
The number 11 was Jacob’s favorite number and also his jersey number.
Before the game, the Twins announcer read aloud the list of 11 traits the Wetterling’s asked people to do to honor Jacob.
Signage all across Target Field also donned Jacob's number, including a large sign in left field.
It was a special for everyone in attendance, but most especially for those with young children who have spent the last 27 years wondering if a day like this would ever come. Many fans also joined in, wearing 11’s of their own.
"We were going to the game tonight and it was [my son’s] idea to wear the jersey and hat with the number 11 on it,” said Scott Klinkhammer. “As much as we can honor the Wetterling’s that's what we want to do, that's what we are here for."
Also in attendance tonight were 30 members of the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center.
The Minnesota Twins are going to auction off 11 game-worn jerseys with the number 11 patch. All of the proceeds will go to the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center. Fans can bid on the jerseys at this link.
