Minnesota weather: Sunny Friday with snow chances returning this weekend

Friday will have clear skies and lots of sunshine, but things could get a little messy this weekend.

Friday forecast

Big picture view:

Enjoy the sun while it lasts, because it may be a few days before we see it again.

Friday will be cooler than Thursday's record-breaking high temperatures.

Twin Cities temperatures will reach around 40 degrees, 15 degrees above average for the day.

Freezing temperatures will return in the evening.

Weekend forecast

What's next:

Cloud cover increases by Saturday morning, bringing with it more chances for precipitation.

Snow opportunities will likely increase by the middle part of Saturday, especially north of Interstate 94. However, warm temperatures in the Twin Cities could turn those light snowflakes into light sleet, drizzle or rain by the late afternoon and evening.

Saturday temperatures are expected to reach 36 degrees by the afternoon, 38 degrees by the evening.

Duluth, Hibbing and Ely, could see 2-4+ inches of snow.

The North Shore is under a winter storm watch, where more than 6 inches of snow could accumulate.

Sunday will likely be a dreary day with lingering moisture, but will still be seasonably mild.

More winter-like temperatures return on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures in the teens and low twenties.
