As Hurricane Maria churns through the Caribbean, it threatens several islands that were already impacted by Hurricane Irma last week. In places where the infrastructure and relief efforts aren’t organized enough to really help people, there are organizations like ShelterBox USA which step in to help with basic needs.

There are currently four ShelterBox teams in Barbados and Antigua ready to fan out as soon as possible after Maria passes.

ShelterBox provides kits with essentials, like tents, water purification bags, solar lights and tarps. The idea is to help people get through the first few months after a disaster before other relief agencies arrive to help re-build.

Greg Krauska is a local volunteer for this charity and was drawn in by his local rotary.

“If you’ve seen a disaster on the news and if people are displaced for more than a couple weeks, we are probably sending a team to evaluate and if not send supplies to get people back on their feet,” says Krauska. “We are currently in nine different disasters around the world from South America to Asia,” he added.
