MN election: Senate District 60 heading to special primary and election
ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - The 2025 Minnesota state legislative session will be underway before special elections are held later in January to sort out vacant seats -- one in each chamber.
Senate seat vacant after lawmaker died in December 2024
The senate seat backstory: Former senate majority leader, 62-year-old Kari Dziedzic, passed away at the end of last year after battling ovarian cancer. The DFL senator served in the heavily-blue district in Hennepin County for more than a decade.
Senate District 60 candidates: The filing period for candidates to withdraw ended Thursday evening. Now the field is set for candidates to first face off in a special primary.
According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office, as of Thursday evening, there are eight DFL candidates who filed – Doron Clark, Peter Wagenius, Iris Grace Altamirano, Mohamed Jama, Monica Meyer, Joshua Preston, Amal Karim, Emilio César Rodríguez. Two GOP candidates are filed in this race – Abigail Wolters and Christopher Robin Zimmerman.

- Jan. 9-13 – Absentee and Early Voting
- Jan. 14 – Special Primary
Special Election for Senate District 60
- Jan. 21 – Deadline to pre-register
- Jan. 22-27 – Absentee and Early Voting
- Jan. 28 – Special Election Day
With these dates fast approaching, the Secretary of State’s Office recommends dropping off absentee ballots in person.
