MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Officer Mohamed Noor, who was charged Tuesday in the fatal shooting of Justine Damond, is no longer employed by the Minneapolis Police Department, according to Chief Medaria Arradondo.
In a statement, Arradondo said Noor's last day of employment was Tuesday, March 20. Noor, 32, was hired by the MPD on March 23, 2015. He was the Fifth Precinct’s first Somali-American police officer.
On July 15, Noor shot and killed Damond, a 40-year-old meditation teacher from Australia, in the alley of her home in south Minneapolis after she called 911 to report a possible sexual assault.
Arradondo said the Hennepin County Attorney's Office had asked him to delay any employment-related decisions regarding Noor until after the criminal investigation was complete.
"This tragic event happened on my watch as Acting Chief," Arradondo said in a statement. "Today, as Chief of Police, I am ultimately responsible for the conduct of the men and women who wear this uniform and badge. Sanctity of life, to include the protection of life, is the cornerstone of our fundamental duties as peace officers."
