LAKE ELMO, Minn. (KMSP) - Like most dogs, Roo Roo the Wonder Dog spends most of her days sleeping and playing with toys. However, there's a reason for that elaborate name.
Roo Roo, a 4-year-old terrier, does everything other dogs do, except she does it on two legs instead of four, and has a hop like that of a kangaroo -- hence the name. She was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Kentucky and brought to Minnesota by Secondhand Hounds to get a second chance.
"We do know what she had was amputated. Whether they were nubs or full paws at that point, it’s something we'll never know. She is well-adapted to moving around, doing the things she has to do,” her foster mom said.
Someone donated a special chair so Roo Roo can sit up straight when she eats, and her foster family got a harness to help her around the backyard while she waits for a custom-built cart to arrive next week.
"Her back legs are very strong. They compensate for holding her entire body weight. We are trying to give her spine and mind the idea of, ‘let’s just walk,’ and she does it for a while, and then remembers she wants to hop."
They say life is all about overcoming obstacles, and Roo Roo is proof anyone, or anything, can learn to stand on their own two feet.
"She is just determined to do things. Nothing is stopping her, not even baby gates."
