St. Cloud paramedic passes away on duty

The St. Cloud medical community is mourning the loss of a paramedic, who died from a stroke while on duty over the weekend, according to an online obituary.

Nicole Van Heel, 34, died Sunday at the St. Cloud Hospital from complications after suffering a stroke. Van Heel had worked for Gold Cross Ambulance for nearly 12 years.

"She loved to provide and she loved to work with people," said Elie Deeb, a Gold Cross ambulance supervisor. "It's a huge loss."

A public wake will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church in St. Cloud. On Friday, there will a memorial service at the church at 11 a.m. Following the service, there will be procession of emergency vehicles to Assumption Cemetery. The Mayo Clinic helicopter is also planned to fly over the cemetery.
