ROCHESTER, Minn. (KMSP) - A college student from Rochester, Minnesota is one of 32 Americans who were chosen as Rhodes Scholars and will pursue post-graduate studies at Oxford University in England.
The Rhodes Trust announced the 2017 scholars-elect on Saturday. The scholars are chosen from a pool of 882 selected students from 311 different colleges and university.
Ahmed M. Ahmed, a senior at Cornell University, is a first generation Somali immigrant whose family immigrated to the United States from a refugee camp in Kenya, the announcement said. He plans to pursue a master's degree in research in organic and medical chemistry at Oxford and eventually hopes to attend medical school.
Ahmed is majoring in biology at Cornell. He has worked as a student advisor, teaching assistant and tutor on campus. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and served with the university's emergency management services.
