New details in Lake Harriet shooting
FOX 9's Karen Scullin gives the latest update after an officer and suspect exchanged gunfire at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. No one was injured in the shooting.
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A suspect has been arrested after allegedly exchanging gunfire with a Minneapolis Park Police Officer near Lake Harriet.
Around 11:56 p.m. on Tuesday, authorities were investigating a "suspicious vehicle" that was illegally parked and blocking access to the Lake Harriet boat launch.
According to a press release, the vehicle was unoccupied at the time, but the responding officer was later confronted by a 24-year-old man who claimed to own the vehicle. During the investigation, the officer’s emergency lights were activated, and the suspect was, "immediately uncooperative and became combative,"
The suspect then fired shots in the direction of the officer, who fired in return. A squad car was damaged during the shooting, but neither the suspect nor the officer sustained any injuries, according to police.
The responding officer called for assistance after the suspect fled on foot, with both Minneapolis Park Police and the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) responding. He was located and arrested a short distance away near Lake Harriet.
Both Park Police and the MPD are conducting a criminal investigation following the incident.
According to the press release, the officer wore a bodycam that was on and active.
