HOPKINS, Minn. (KMSP) - Thieves hit a local bike shop for several high-end bicycles this weekend and it may not be the only local bike shop that thieves have targeted lately.
The owner of Jonny Rock Bikes in Hopkins, Minn. said thieves stole around eight to ten bikes from his shop early Saturday morning.
“Every time I look around, I say ‘that's gone, oh, that's gone,” Jonathan Minks said. “They definitely picked out some of our best bikes in here and they picked out goods that were high-end products that could be sold on a number of different platforms relatively easy.”
Minks said the bikes stolen include Norco, KHS, Surly and Krampus models. Minks said the thieves would have gotten away with more, if it were not for a sharp-eyed neighbor who noticed unusual activity at the shop. He said the thieves quickly drove off when the neighbor approached.
“It's tough, because we don't have a lot of super high end stuff. We're a neighborhood family bike shop, but we do like to have a few really nice bikes in here for the customers that come in and want something really nice, at a good price. Now that inventory is kind of gone,” Minks said.
The thieves even went so far as to cut off the electricity to render security cameras useless.
“The hard part is thinking about were they in here? Did I talk to them? Did I show them all my great bikes and stuff like that, and was I a sucker?” Minks said.
Word of the theft as spread across the metro, with other store owners saying they too have been hit.
“They've been happy to share some information with us, and we've been happy to share some with them to hopefully catch these people and hopefully not have any more bike shops get broken into,” Minks said.
