Twin Cities baker makes local landmarks out of cake

When designing and baking cakes, Dr. Nneka Onuma is able to let her imagination run wild, but now she is using her talents to celebrate the state she calls home in her favorite medium.

"Why not tell the Minnesota story with cake?"

Local perspective:

Ouma is creating cakes inspired by local landmarks as part of a project with Zandolee media called Sweet Heaven Minnesota.

So far ,she's done one of the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture in Minneapolis and another of the Carlitos Brown Statue along Cesar Chavez Street in St Paul.

They then take the cakes to the actual locations and start converstations about the interesting places the state has to offer and post the videos on social media.

"There are cool things to see and cool places to go hang out in the state of Minnesota. So this is kind of a way to kind of build awareness around that," said Onuma.

The backstory:

For her custom cake business, Onuma has whipped up everything from fire-breathing dragons and books to 3D butterflies and basketballs.

She plans other creations based on the Foshay Tower, the loon statue outside Allianz Field and even the Paul Bunyan statue in Brainerd once the weather gets warm.

"I think it's a really fun way to kind of bring attention to some fun things that some people know about, but a lot of other people don't," said Onuma.

What they're saying:

For now, the cakes aren't edible and are only for display, but she hopes they highlight what is great about the state that became her home when her family moved to Minnesota from Nigeria when she was younger.

"This has been my home away from home and I think this is an absolutely wonderful way to kind of celebrate my newfound home," said Onuma.
