President Trump, UFC President Dana White to discuss press secretary job Monday

President Donald Trump let the world know Saturday who he wanted to be the next White House spokesperson.

What we know:

The president posted that he offered the press secretary role to Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White but did not say if the man whose current job is running the world's largest mixed martial arts promotion had accepted. Trump's post also included a list of names of people the president would like White to bring with him.

Will Dana White be press secretary?

What we don't know:

Whether White becomes the next face of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. may not be known for at least a couple of days. White is currently in London for a boxing event. He told reporters during a news conference that he would be flying to Washington for a Monday meeting with Trump.

White, whose relationship with Trump stretches back to when the real estate magnate's Atlantic City casinos served as a launchpad for UFC, declined to say how much he has spoken to Trump but added, "I'm sure I'll have more to talk about after that."

Dig deeper:

When asked about balancing such a high-pressure position in the White House with all his current roles in the fighting world, the UFC head conceded, "Yeah, I got a lot of jobs already."

Prior to the news conference, White did share an image on Instagram that had Trump's post and a shot of himself at the podium in the White House press briefing room, alongside the caption, "On to the next chapter."

What they're saying:

"I am pleased to announce that the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior, has been offered the job of Press Secretary of the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "I have requested that he bring with him assistants, even though some are not from our Country, of Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Kayla Harris. We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left. Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job!"

Who is Dana White?

The backstory:

Trump and White’s relationship dates back to 2001, when White made his first appearance as UFC president at one of Trump’s casinos in Atlantic City.

Twenty-five years later, UFC staged fights under the Freedom 250 banner on the South Lawn of the White House to celebrate Trump’s 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s signing.

Observers say their relationship has yielded personal, political and financial dividends for both parties. White earned the mainstream visibility for himself and the sport he craved as he stumped for Trump at GOP conventions, while the emboldened right-wing " manosphere " that soaks up at UFC fights threw its support behind Trump in the elections.

How long has the White House been without a press secretary?

Timeline:

The White House has been without a press secretary since Oct. 16, when Katie Zacharia left after five days on the job. Her five-day tenure was the shortest of any White House press secretary in U.S. history.

In those five days, Zacharia faced intense scrutiny. She answered just three questions from reporters during her first and only briefing.

In the days that followed, questions emerged about her legal credentials and qualifications for the position, fueling further criticism of her appointment and whether she was up for the job.

Before Zacharia’s short stint, Karoline Leavitt served as press secretary from January 2025, the start of Trump’s second term, until the end of August.
