BROWN COUNTY, Minn. (FOX 9) - A UTV fell through the ice on Lake Hanska in Brown County Saturday morning.
UTV through thin ice in Brown County
What we know:
According to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, just after 11 a.m. a UTV fell through the ice on Lake Hanska east of Geiger's Point. The occupants were able to escape and were uninjured.
The UTV remains partially submerged in the lake, and will be removed Sunday, authorities said.
Authorities warn of thin ice
What they're saying:
The Sheriff's Office says to use caution when going out on the ice, especially at night, as no ice is "100%" safe.
They also say to refrain from driving on ice whenever possible. If you do, keep your windows down and be prepared to leave quickly.
Authorities also warn to not "overdrive" your vehicle's headlights.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources gives the following guidelines for going on ice:
- Under 4 inches of ice: Stay off.
- 4 inches of ice: Walking, ice fishing, ice skating, or other activities on foot.
- 5–7 inches of ice: Snowmobiling or riding a small ATV.
- 7–8 inches of ice: Riding a side-by-side ATV.
- 9–12 inches of ice: Driving a car.
- 13–17 inches of ice: Driving a truck.
- More than 20 in: Driving a large truck with a wheelhouse shelter.
