CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The city of Chicago released dash-cam footage Monday that captured a fatal police shooting on the South Side last year.
The video shows the fatal shooting of Ronald Johnson, who was shot to death by a Chicago Police officer on Oct. 12, 2014 in the 5300 block of South King. He was pronounced dead less than an hour later at the University of Chicago Media Center.
Since his death, his mother Dorothy Holmes and family have been fighting for the city to release the video.
Police say the 25-year-old Johnson pointed a gun at officers before he was shot at about 12:35 a.m. on Oct. 12.
Michael Oppenheimer, an attorney for the mother of Johnson, told FOX 32 last week that Johnson got out of a vehicle and ran, but was chased down by officers and shot five times.
“This could have been a lot easier if they released it 14 months ago. All of the lies, coverup, that’s still going on,” Oppenheimer said Thursday.
The video's release comes on the heels of another highly publicized shooting by Chicago Police.
The City of Chicago released video two weeks ago of the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald by officer Jason Van Dyke on Oct. 20, 2014. Demonstrators have marched in protest since the video's release on Nov. 24.
