SARDINE CANYON, Utah - Shocking video released by authorities in Utah shows a state trooper being hit by a car while helping a vehicle stranded in the snow.
The Utah Department of Public Safety said Sgt. Cade Brenchely, a second generation trooper, was aiding a motorist in Sardine Canyon when the incident happened.
The video shows Brenchely walking on a snow-covered roadway toward the stranded vehicle when he is hit from behind by a car.
The collision throws Brenchely into the air and into the side of the vehicle he was attempting to help.
Brenchely suffered broken ribs and a broken shoulder blade. Officials said Brenchely is a 13-year veteran of the Utah Highway Patrol, a father of four and serves as a local soccer coach.
“Our department is thankful to the multiple bystanders who came to the aide of Sgt. Brenchley after he was struck,” a written statement from the department of public safety read in part. “The dash cam video shows many people on the scene who stopped to offer aide and called for help on his car radio. Some of the Cache Valley first responders included three of Sgt. Brenchley’s cousins.”
Officials said the video is another example of why drivers should move over and slow down for emergency vehicles.
