The giant crowd that came to Target Center simply to see a pack of Timberwolves scrimmage on a nice summer night in downtown Minneapolis floored team staff, and it floored No. 1 draft pick Karl-Anthony Towns.
A final count from the team registered 15,200 fans that filled the skyway from the arena to Macy’s and filled the box office lobby for a chance to see Towns and Apple Valley’s own Tyus Jones in person, together for the first time.
Also, that fan count is more than the average home game attendance for the 2014-15 season.
Young Wolves Towns, Jones, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine all participated in the scrimmage, threw down a round of dunks at the end of the night, then stayed for an hour to sign autographs for season ticket holders. (By the way, most of those players were born after 1989.)
Towns made a pre-scrimmage speech thanking the crowd for their unprecedented attendance – again, this was a scrimmage – and tallied 24 points and 15 rebounds in 27 minutes of play; three quarters of nine minutes each. He also had one particular between-the-legs dunk that dazzled the crowd and proved his long-range shooting ability isn't a myth, it's something Wolves fans can actually look forward to seeing this season.
