ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - University of St. Thomas football coach Glenn Caruso introduced his 2025 recruiting class on Wednesday, and he had a very clear intent and identity for the new players.
"Athletic multiplicity."
Caruso signed 30 new players as the Tommies will lose 16 to graduation. St. Thomas added 22 freshmen during the early signing period in December, and signed nine more on Wednesday, including four transfers.
The class at a glance
By the numbers:
The 2025 class features 12 defensive players, 19 offensive players and three specialists. Caruso added nine players from Minnesota, eight from Wisconsin and the Mr. Football out of Iowa. Of the 30 players, 27 worked out for Caruso at a St. Thomas camp, 21 were multi-sport athletes and seven can play either side of the football. The signees visited campus an average of three times.
"More than two thirds of the class are multi-sport athletes, that is rare nowadays and I love that. Being able to find guys that can do things," Caruso said. "It worked out really, really well for us. Really it comes down to opportunities for that young man and how that applies to our team being able to be a little bit better."
Did playoff eligibility impact class?
Why you should care:
Caruso is 31-13 in four seasons at the FCS level, and 26-6 in Pioneer League play. The Tommies will be eligible for the FCS Playoffs next fall, provided they win the conference. It would be their first year in that scenario, so did that possibility impact the players that signed?
"I can’t say it didn’t. I can just say it didn’t come up once in conversation. These are the 30 that we got, to get these 30 we’re probably seriously looking at 600 and visiting 300 to get 10 percent of that. The average kid in this class visited three times, not once did that actually come up," Caruso said. "I’m grateful that that scenario has happened. I know two years ago when we went undefeated and won the league, the number of texts I got when the bracket came out from buddies, I said we’re only in Year 2 so we have to sit and wait."
Spring football
What's next:
St. Thomas will start spring practices in the first week of April. Spring football will include intra-squad scrimmages, and the Tommies’ Spring Game is set for May 10.
Caruso will enter his 18th season with St. Thomas next fall.
