Vikings sign QB Daniel Jones to active roster ahead of NFC Playoffs

The Minnesota Vikings made a roster move at quarterback Tuesday afternoon, and it might turn a few heads.

The Vikings announced they’ve signed Daniel Jones to the active roster, and waived quarterback Brett Rypien, who had served this season as the team’s No. 3 emergency quarterback. Jones was signed to the Vikings’ practice squad in late November after he was released from the New York Giants.

What the move means

Why it matters: Sam Darnold remains the starter, despite going 18-of-41 for just 166 yards and no touchdowns in a 31-9 loss at the Detroit Lions with the No. 1 seed in the NFC at stake. Nick Mullens is still the No. 2, and Jones will now dress as the emergency No. 3 quarterback for the playoffs.

The move prevented another NFL team in the playoffs from signing Jones to their active roster.

What does Jones’ future look like?

What we know: Jones was the Nol. 6 overall pick by the Giants in 2019 and spent five-plus seasons in New York. He beat the Vikings in a playoff game at U.S. Bank Stadium two years ago, leading to the firing of Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator.

If the Vikings let Darnold walk after the season, Jones would either conceivably be the back-up to J.J. McCarthy, or start the season if McCarthy isn’t ready.

Jones will be dressed and in uniform when the Vikings face the L.A. Rams in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs next Monday night.
