ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - Tuesday's game between the Minnesota Wild and their rivals, the Chicago Blackhawks, at the Xcel Energy Center will be dedicated to Matt Olson, the Minnesota native who was paralyzed during a game with his Chicago-based junior hockey team in February.
20-year-old Olson severely injured his spinal cord when he crashed into the boards head first while racing for the puck during a game with the Chicago Cougars, a member of the U.S. Premier Hockey League. The accident left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Wild and Blackhawks players will sport stickers on their helmets Tuesday night to show their support for Olson during his recovery process. Olson's family will give the traditional "Let's play hockey" call at the start of the game.
Both teams have donated several one-of-a-kind items for an online auction to raise money for Olson and his family. The items include a chance to travel with one of the teams, locker room meet-and-greets and an autographed 2016 Stadium Series jacket. The auction ends on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
Wild owner Craig Leipold and Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz are also matching donations to Olson and his family up to $20,000. More information can be found at wild.nhl.com.
