Back to School 2020: MN Teacher of the year finalist on the challenges of a new year

Tuesday is the traditional start to the school year in Minnesota, but it will be anything but normal. Districts across the state will welcome back students using a variety of methods, and for teachers, that means adapting to quick changes. Minnesota Teacher of the Year finalist and Pine City High School English teacher, Ryan Larson, joined us with more on Back to School Eve.

A son of Saint Paul - History Theatre taking on story of Melvin Carter Jr.

Saint Paul's History Theatre might be dark, but the company is still working to bring pieces of Minnesota History to life. As part of a new works festival, they'll stream a new play that's in development, "Diesel Heart". The show tells the story of Melvin Carter Jr. (who happens to be the father of Saint Paul mayor Melvin Carter). Playwright Brian Grandison joined the Buzz with more on what audiences can expect.

YMCA offering distance learning space for kids this fall

It's a big issue for many parents right now: where can their kids safely do their distance learning this fall? The YMCA is now offering programming during school hours to provide children a space to attend virtual classes while supervised by Y staff. Back to School 2020: Stress could lead to increased addiction in kids

Less structure and anxiety surrounding distance learning could lead to alcohol and drug use. The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is working with districts to fight that risk. Patient Care Network and Youth Outreach director Jessica Wong joined the Buzz with signs parents should look for to know if their child is using alcohol and drugs.
