Meet a Minnesota State Fair button collector
Minnesotans go to the Minnesota State Fair for all sorts of reasons. For some, it’s the food. For others, it’s the entertainment. For Sue Buetow, it’s for the buttons. Buetow has been collecting Minnesota State Fair buttons for years. She has about 1,000. Some small, some big, some are from politicians, and others mark historical moments at the fair, like 100 years of the cattle barn. Her oldest is from 1910.
Save Minnesota’s prairies by harvesting seeds
Minnesota’s prairie is dwindling and every year hundreds of volunteers help collect wildflower seed that’s used to restore thousands of acres of prairie managed by Three Rivers Park District. They host events all across the metro through October. They train each attendee to identify plants while also learning about the history of Minnesota’s prairies. A reservation is required to attend the events.
Help track monarch butterflies before their journey
Three Rivers Park District is looking for citizen scientists. There are events throughout August and September that aids in researching an endangered species. The park system will be training visitors on how to catch and tag Monarch Butterflies. The butterflies will soon be leaving on their 2,000-mile journey to Mexico and tagging them can help scientists understand their travel patterns and protect the habitats they visit along the way. These events happen all across the metro and you do need to sign up ahead of time to attend.

Porta Potty chase in Michigan
A slow speed chase in Michigan. Strong winds sent a porta-potty blowing across a parking lot. The police cruiser reached 16 mph as officers chased their suspect down. Luckily, the officer stopped the porta-potty before it tipped over.

Children’s Theatre director stepping down

Raku Firing at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts
It’s said that having a hobby can lead to improved mental health, and if you don’t know where to start, check out the fall catalogue for the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Classes begin Sept. 5. They are offering everything from ceramics to weaving, jewelry making, photography, flower arranging, painting and even the fiery ancient Japanese ceramics technique called Raku firing.
