Teen tennis star advances at French Open Juniors

A young tennis player from Savage is taking his skills all the way to the French Open Juniors. 16-year-old Max Exsted picked up a tennis racket when he was just a year old, and he never looked back. Now he is overseas in Paris playing in the main draw of the French Open Juniors.

Edina Art Fair is this weekend

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to check out the Edina Art Fair happening this weekend in and around 50th and France. It’s one of the top art fairs in the country with hundreds of artists participating. The Edina Art Fair starts at noon on Friday, June 2. It runs until 7 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday the art fair is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday you can browse art from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plan your trip ahead of time as traffic can be challenging and parking is limited. They do offer a shuttle from Southdale Mall.

Flint Hills Family Festival returns to St. Paul

This weekend, music and theater are in the spotlight in St. Paul as the family friendly Flint Hills Festival kicks off. There are free performances and activities in Rice Park and top notch acts playing the Ordway stage for just $5. One of the featured acts is Lightwire Theater. They combine theater and technology utilizing electroluminescent suits, music and sound effects to tell a story. They were semi-finalists on America’s Got Talent Season 7 and have been traveling the world ever since. The Lightwire Theater shows are on Saturday June 3 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Ex-monster truck driver continues to entertain

After 20 years building and driving monster trucks all over the country, Jim Bendzick is switching gears. He’s still tinkering and experimenting but now he’s doing it on his land and filming it for his YouTube channel, Thunder Acres. He has a lot of interesting machinery and obstacles on his land, including a monster truck and a powerful launcher, plus a bus with a dirt ramp to jump it. Even though he’s not on the monster truck circuit anymore, he’s still finding ways to entertain people.

Top chef Ann Kim adding brunch to the menu

James Beard Award winning Chef Ann Kim is trying something new. She’s added brunch to Young Joni’s menu, and starting July 1st, Sooki & Mimi will also get into the brunch game. The menu at her Northeast Minneapolis spot, Young Joni is offered Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm. Some of the highlights include Ann’s childhood favorite, Juk, a Korean rice porridge with a soft egg and Korean short rib, and the Rise & Shine brunch pizza.

Cars and Caves gives a salute to veterans

Car lovers will be coming together for a big salute to veterans this weekend at the Chanhassen AutoPlex. This month's Cars and Caves event is raising money for a special non-profit that helps veterans. Cody's Heroes pairs vets up with emotional support dogs. WreckIt Rage Room opens in Savage

Sometimes you just gotta let it out. And there’s growing demand across the country for a place to safely rage. They’re known as crush rooms or rage rooms and one just opened up in Savage. It’s called WreckIt Rage Room and it gives people the chance to throw glass plates at the wall, or smash bottles with a bat. There are also bigger ticket items like TV’s or computer monitors you can crush with a sledgehammer. The rage room is located at 3930 CR-42 W in Savage. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday.

'Forest Bathing' at the U of M Landscape Arboretum

As part of the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Nature Heals Initiative, the arboretum is offering “forest bathing” courses that allow people to explore a stronger, more meaningful connection with nature. The term “forest bathing” is inspired by the Japanese concept of “shinrin yoku” which means taking in the atmosphere of the forest, often times as a form of therapy.

Coffee and kicks on the menu at Ninth Street

The metro has several unique coffee shop concepts. In Apple Valley, there’s Curiouser Coffee which is part coffee shop, part conservatory. In Plymouth, the Brew Park is a coffee shop and dog park combo. And in Minneapolis, Ninth Street blends soccer and coffee. There are pickup games nightly, but it’s also used for personal training groups and for kids, a free open play option every Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. Ninth Street Soccer and Coffee is located at 801 SE 9th St. in the Marcy Holmes neighborhood of Minneapolis. It’s open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Minnesota Wind Chill off to a hot start

Minnesota’s pro Ultimate team is 2-0 on the season and sitting atop the division. The Wind Chill play in the American Ultimate Disc League. The team finished the 2022 season 9-3, winning their first playoff game in franchise history. There are five more home games this season and they’ll be hosting the championships in August on their home turf, Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul. The team’s next home game is Saturday, June 3, against the Chicago Union.

Art-a-Whirl returns for 28th year

A plan to bring the public to art studios in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District (NEMAA) started in 1995. Now it involves more than 1,200 artists in 70-plus locations. Art-A-Whirl runs Friday May 19 through Sunday May 21. It’s a chance to interact with the artists, see demos and even try an art project with the pro. NEMAA’s website offers all the info needed to navigate the popular event from transportation and parking to a map of all the participating studios and local breweries and restaurants.
