Kowalski trial: Cathi Bedy battery damages
A Florida jury returned after hearing closing arguments in a trial originating from a $220 million civil lawsuit alleging actions of staff at a children's hospital drove the mother of a sick child to suicide in 2017. The case was featured in the Netflix documentary ‘Take Care of Maya’. In 2016, at just 10 years old, Maya Kowalski was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital for severe pain and was removed from the custody of her parents after staff accused them of "medical abuse." Her mother, Beata Kowalski, hung herself in her garage on Jan. 7, 2016, after going months without seeing her due to the medical abuse allegations, according to the family's attorney, Greg Anderson. Cathi Bedy's involvement in Maya's battery and imprisonent was discussed in the verdict. Bedy was the social worker assigned to Maya’s case after a judge ordered her to be sheltered at the hospital, in state custody, while allegations of child abuse were investigated.
