Love amidst memory loss
Nationwide, seniors are dealing with isolation and loneliness, but there are programs popping up to try and combat this growing issue. Locally, Senior Helpers offers non-medical in-home care. One of their initiatives on Valentine’s Day was to make and deliver cards to seniors all over the Twin Cities. At one of these card-making sessions we met the Miller family. In 2017, Trudy was diagnosed with dementia and is now in memory care. Two years later, Terry was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Their diseases are progressing at different rates meaning they need different levels of care, so they no longer live in the same facility. Senior Helpers gets them together for dates twice a week. And on this day, their three children joined them as well. They reminisced about their 63-years of marriage while spreading love to other seniors.
