MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The overall storm threat for Friday, Aug 24 is HIGH. There is a MARGINAL RISK for severe storms in the Twin Cities metro, including the Minnesota State Fair, and a SLIGHT RISK for southern Minnesota.
After a couple different rounds of rain for sections of the metro late Thursday night and Friday morning, a third round pushed into parts of the west metro Friday morning with scattered storm chances continuing in the afternoon and evening.
While it will NOT be a wash-out, with significant breaks in any rain likely, the chances for storms will stay around through sunset. Zones in the atmosphere are churning and storms could really develop at any point.
The overall severe weather risk is low, but not nonexistent Friday. If these morning rounds of rain clear out, and we can get a little sun and a few hours of dry conditions in the metro, then some stronger storms late Friday afternoon and Friday evening will be possible, with some 50 mph winds and quarter-size hail possible.
Again, overall chances of this happening are very very slim. A better opportunity exists for an isolated severe storm in southern Minnesota with some half dollar size hail and 60 mph winds.

On Opening Day, the public parking lots at the fairgrounds were full by 11:15 a.m. At 11:28 a.m., the Minnesota State Fair announced all Park & Ride lots were full.
