Minnesota weather: A colder and slightly brighter start to the New Year

New Year's Day is expected to be slightly brighter and colder but quiet to ring in the new year.

What to expect: New Year's Day will bring a brighter and cooler pattern for the week and into the weekend, but cloud cover lingers Wednesday. There are expected to be holes in the clouds, bringing in some sun at times, especially in southwestern Minnesota. 

Wednesday will be a colder day overall, with the high temperature in the Twin Cities being 21 degrees. The southern half of the state will also have high temperatures in the low 20s, while the northern half of the state will have high temperatures in the teens. 

Wednesday night will be seasonable, with temperatures dipping into the teens in the Twin Cities and some single digits in northern Minnesota. 

Colder week ahead

What's next: Thursday is expected to be similar to Wednesday, but a bit brighter. By Friday, the clouds will move out, bringing a sunny, but colder weekend. 

Thursday will be slightly cooler with high temperatures expected to be in the high teens. 

The cooler temperatures will linger for the week.
