Minnesota weather: Frigid but quiet and brighter on Monday

It's bitterly cold but a brighter day on Monday with subzero windchills and partly cloudy skies.

Monday's forecast in Minnesota

What to expect:

It’s a frigid start to Monday with below zero temperatures and even colder windchills.

A cold weather advisory is in effect for northern Minnesota until 10 a.m. Monday, where windchills are as low as 35 degrees below zero. In these areas, temperatures likely won’t climb above zero throughout the day. Several schools are opening late on Monday due to the frigid cold.

In central and southern Minnesota, daytime highs will reach the single digits, but northwesterly winds at 10-15 mph will make it feel below zero on Monday. The Twin Cities metro daytime high is 6 degrees.

The day will be brighter with the occasional passing cloud. Overnight lows will fall below zero across Minnesota with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies.

Warmer temperatures ahead

What's next:

Overnight clouds will give way to a sunny Tuesday with lighter breezes. While the morning will remain cold, temperatures will warm slightly into the single digits.

By Wednesday, southwest winds will bring warmer weather, with highs in the 20s. However, some cloud cover is likely due to a clipper system passing to the northeast.

A steady warming trend will continue through the remainder of the workweek, with highs climbing into the mid and upper 30s. However, temperatures will drop back into the teens and single digits over the weekend.
