Tornado touches down in southern Minnesota

A video captured by Jamie Kiefer shows what appears to be a tornado touching down just outside Hayfield, about 90 miles southeast of the Twin Cities, on Monday, May 20. Chances for severe weather are expected across the Midwest on Tuesday, including in Minnesota.

A tornado struck near Hayfield, Minnesota, on Monday evening ahead of a severe weather threat on Tuesday.

FOX 9 Chief Meteorologist Ian Leonard has confirmed that a tornado struck near Hayfield, eight miles southwest of Dodge Center, Minnesota, just before 7 p.m.

A video captured by Jamie Kiefer shows what appears to be a tornado touching down in a field. It's unclear how long the tornado was on the ground or whether any damage or injuries were reported. 

In Minnesota, tornadoes generally occur from May to September, although the seasonally latest recorded tornado was in December 2021. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the state sees approximately 46 tornadoes per year on average

This tornado is just the start of possible severe weather from Monday night into Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon, some strong storms are expected for a large part of Minnesota.
