MN weather: Still fairly mild Monday as blustery breezes return

It'll be fairly mild on Monday, with a high of around 40 degrees for the Twin Cities.

Monday's forecast

Temperatures will slide on Monday as we go through the afternoon thanks to a cold front impacting the area. The high will top out around 40 degrees.

In northern Minnesota, though, a cold front brought several inches-plus of snow north of Duluth toward International Falls and the North Shore area. There's also concern about blowing snow across the Red River Valley.

It'll be quiet from Monday night into Tuesday, but it'll be breezy. Then it'll be tranquil on Tuesday with patchy sun. A high of 26 degrees is in the forecast for the Twin Cities.

It's about to get a lot colder

And then it'll get a lot colder, thanks to a frigid air mass essentially out of the North Pole. This could kick off with a touch of snow.

It'll be the coldest air of the season, and it could rival the coldest air we saw all of last winter. Wind chills Wednesday afternoon could be in the negative teens in the Twin Cities and 20s and 30s across Northern Minnesota, and it could get even colder.

The coldest in the Twin Cities last winter was 8 below last January. It could be about 6 below this week.

The good news? It won't last long. By this coming weekend, highs will be back in the 20s and 30s in the Twin Cities.

The average high at this time of year is 31 degrees, with an average low of 17 degrees.
