MN weather: Tuesday forecast update

FOX 9's Keith Marler shares an update on the forecast.

What we know: A system is moving into southwestern Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon, bringing a potential for 1–3 inches of snow. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 9 p.m. and affects a small portion of the state, including from Marshall to the Iowa border, and between Highway 75 and Highway 71.

The system will try and push east, bringing scattered light flakes along the I-90 corridor and to the Twin Cities metro by the evening. The metro may see a light dusting of snow, while others will only see a few flakes.

The snow may create slippery road conditions which could impact the Tuesday evening commute, though the system will push out during the overnight hours. You can check the latest road conditions and crash reports at 511mn.org.

More snow chances on Thursday

What’s next: A potent Alberta Clipper will move out of Canada and into the Upper Midwest late Wednesday and into Thursday that is likely to bring a swath of several inches of snow, and potentially the largest snowstorm of the season for the Twin Cities so far.

The expected path of this storm is still very much in flux and will have implications on just how much snow the Twin Cities will receive.

Digging deeper: The official climate site of the Twin Cities, MSP Airport, has yet to record at least an inch during a snowstorm so far this season. This is way behind when we typically receive it.

This is the latest into the season the Twin Cities metro has gone without reaching that mark since 2006, when it occurred on Dec. 21. This is easily the latest over the last several years with even a couple of October appearances over the last seven years.

The metro has only made it to January without a 1-inch-plus snowstorm four times since 1885 — the record being Jan. 21, 2005.
